al-Kashshāf ʿan ḥaqāʾiq ghawāmiḍ al-tanzīl is the tafsīr of Abū al-Qāsim Maḥmūd al-Zamakhsharī (d. 538/1144). It is centered on language, grammar, and rhetoric, and foregrounds the literary iʿjāz of the Qurʾān (badīʿ, bayān, and maʿānī).

Significance

  • Through its rhetorical insights and subtleties, it has profoundly influenced subsequent tafāsīr (al-Bayḍāwī, Abū al-Suʿūd…).
  • It has been criticized for its Muʿtazilī interpretations, and refutations (rudūd) and glosses (ḥawāshī) have been written on those sections.
